MTV Asia Awards 2006

Finally, the MTV Asia Awards (MAAs) 2006 came. It took place 6th May 2006 in Siam Peragon, Bangkok, Thailand. It was the second time that Thailand hosted the event. The first was last year where the MAAs reformatted and was transformed to MTV Asia Aid to “aid” those people who were badly affected by the tsunami that happened in South Asia last December 2004. You can read my post about MTV Asia Aid here.

The opening act was Korn. I cannot really tell if they were good at that time because I am not really a fan of hard rock. Compared to the previous MAAs (this year is the 5th), I can tell that only few international acts performed/came. I am not really sure if this is only the organizers’ way of cost-cutting or they want to give more way to Asian artists, for them to be known Asia-wide. And oh, the stage. Yeah the stage! It was bad, sooo bad. It was like they did not think of anything better. It was so ordinary.

I am not sure if the winners are the ones whom the voters voted. It seems like MTV gave those awards to those acts (particularly the international ones) who performed. It’s like this:

MTV: “Would you like to perform at the MAAs?”

Artist: “Sorry, I am busy at the moment”

MTV: “Oh, that’s too bad”

Artist: “Yeah.”

MTV: “Simon Webb agreed to perform at the MAAs and we are planning to give him the Favourite Breakthrough Artist.”

Artist: “Really?”

MTV: “HELL YEAH.”

Artist: “Ok, I’ll be there!”

My favorite part of the MAAs was when Rivermaya performed live. Of course I am a Filipino and I should be proud of them! They did You’ll Be Safe Here and they kind of modified the last few lines of the song to Filipino version. The only one I can remember is “…Sa liwanag, Sa dilim, You’ll be safe here..”.

Hoobastank was also there and they performed their latest single If I Were You. They were great.

The MAAs 2006 was hosted by Wang Lee Hom and Kelly Rowland. Supposed to be, it should be Kelly Clarkson and not Kelly Rowland. When I first heard that Kelly Clarkson would be hosting the MAAs, I was like “Oh please, not her!” and when I heard that she was replaced by Kelly Rowland, I was like “Putangina naman, si Kelly Clarkson na nga lang!!!” (hehe, nagtagalog bigla). It was like she didn’t know what to do at that time when she was hosting the event. Forgive me, but I think she shouldn’t have been there. Yeah, she can sing… but I think she can’t host. Peace!

Overall, I give the MAAs 2006 a 2 out of 5 rating. I hope next year, MAAs will be better. And please… bring the MAAs here in the Philippines!
